Danny + Libby
The Atlantic region for July and August can be somewhat of a no-man's land for wedding work with heat and humidity melting bridal faces like popsicles under a hair dryer. So when Libby contacted me about coming out to Orcas Island, Washington to shoot her and Danny's July 28th "Vintage Orcas Island" wedding, the first thing I did was affirm my hopeful suspicions by going to weather.com. Indeed, while the Puget Sound is typically rather gray, the summer months yield delightful temps and dramatic clouds against brilliantly blue skies - girl, sign me up!
Orcas was chosen as the wedding locale not only for it's rich and unique beauty, but for the significance it held to both Danny and Libby. A place that they both spent time as children, with their families, and then as a couple. Danny initially whisked Libby away to neighboring Obstruction island via sea plane early in their relationship (nice one Danny!) and then proposed to Libby atop Mt. Constitution on Orcas just last year. (Cue bird for photo below.. awesome.)
Two hours via car then ferry for most of the Seattle-based guests, made this destination wedding a fun weekend getaway or for those who had traveled much further it was a chance to explore the magic of the San Juans. Insert shameless plug here: John and I, for example, took it as an opportunity to ride our motorcycles across the country on a summer-long journey, check out our blog. Really we were just looking for a good reason to escape the East Coast heat and ride motos for two months! I digress....
Anyhow, Danny and Libby sweetened the pot with their dedicated efforts to truly make it a genuine Orcas Island experience for all, with thoughtful planning and the cleverest of details! From the ornately addressed and vintage stamped letter press invites, to the rustic charm of rehearsal dinner at Moran State Park, the scene was set for a laid back and classy wedding day - all to take place at the historic Orcas Island Hotel.
Run by the sweetest people on the planet, Doug and Laura Tidwell and their team of hard working young women (including another Piper!!), plus the culinary prowess of their own Chef Ryan makes the Orcas Island Hotel a one-stop shop for an amazing wedding weekend for even the most discerning of palettes. These folks really have it dialed in and fully deserve the bounty of praise a quick Google search yields on the caliber of services. And I'm secretly obsessed with the pirate-like lady that does their housekeeping; striped knee-socks, anchor tattoos, graying braids, and a raspy voice, she brought this experience to full-on Goonies. LOVE!
.....AND the morning after, looking fabulous.... I want that top.
Thank you to the newlyweds for having me be a part of such an incredible weekend! You kicked it off right for a life of love, adventure, happiness, and laughter!
