Elizabeth + Carlos Singin' in the Rain!
I always get a little nervous when a fellow photographer asks me to shoot for them - yikes! The pressure! However, Elizabeth sounded wonderful on the phone, describing a quaint and low key family affair at historic Mt. Welby in Linden, VA with lots of handmade details and an amazing family style dinner by Chef Kevin of More Than Food. The morning of; however, news flashes of torrential downpours and tornado touchdowns as I packed up the car had me saying silent prayers for Elizabeth and Carlos ... and I threw my rain boots in the trunk just in case!
Driving up and over into the Shenendoah's, I watched impending clouds of doom and terror (seriously scary stuff folks) form a black stormy wall that stretched from Frederick to Front Royal. Here we go... and boy did it rain!!! It was Noon and I could barely see well enough to drive! I knew that both the ceremony and reception were supposed to be outside, but with no real backup plan, I could only hope that their family and friends were the type to band together and make stuff happen! The show must go on! And I think rain on your wedding day is good luck!
All hands on deck! The rain subsided in time for the ceremony, clouds cast a nice even glow on everyone's faces and added drama to the sky - whew! With the help of two of the most amazingly calm and cute vendors ever: Meredith the floral maven from Singing Frog Farm, and Dawn the fabulous impromptu reception designer from Something Vintage Rentals, the reception was moved indoors. Amidst the flurry of activity, it was wonderful to see everyone remaining positive and jovial. While I'm sure it was not the sunny wedding day that Elizabeth and Carlos envisioned, there's no question that the day was filled with a special warmth for all of their friends and family coming together under one roof.
Shhh... I totally started crying when Elizabeth told me about how her and Carlos met. The transition-stage restaurant job that so many of us spent our 20s loving and hating, led - in this case - to a unique and powerful bond between two people that genuinely love and respect each other. And while their backgrounds may be quite different, it's so amazing to see how beautifully they support and balance each other.
Merriment ensues!!! Despite (or because of) Mother Nature! Cocktail hour and family portraits were definitely more entertaining than the usual wedding shoot - lots of quick wit and joking around makes it fun to endure the photo that you know Grandma Dottie will love for the Holidays! And truthfully, dining inside the cozy and historic Mt. Welby Manor (mansion?) was pretty amazing even if it was Plan B!
